Climate Change and Transportation in Maine
Spurred by the legislature, “Resolve to Evaluate Climate Change Adaptation Options for the State” the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) is required to evaluate and prepare the future effects of climate change on Maine’s transportation system. Predicted outcomes include: a longer, hotter summer, decrease in snow but an increase of rain in the winter, increased incidents of severe flooding and erosion, change in wildlife migration patterns and increased stress on endangered species with dependence on specific climate conditions. MaineDOT created a proactive approach due to the cost of inaction which would financially impact local businesses, delivery, and motorists.
